About Us
Founded in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, we were searching for ways to create efficiencies for hospital systems and physicians and to create ways to serve the community through timely and accurate death certification.
We serve and contract with more than 16 hospitals to certify inpatient and outpatient deaths.
Receiving an accurate death certificate is essential for families to find closure and manage necessary financial and funeral arrangements. Any delay in certification can create additional hardships during an already challenging period. DCC provides timely and precise death certification,
helping ease this process for families.
By taking on this responsibility, DCC allows physicians to dedicate more time to patient care. Additionally, death certificates play a crucial role in providing epidemiological data,
shedding light on public health threats and disparities.
Matthew D. Cain, M.D.
Co-Founder, Forensic Pathologist
Dr. Cain is a board certified forensic pathologist who currently works as both a forensic pathologist and informaticist at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. He also signs death certificates for multiple hospitals on behalf of DCC and performs autopsies for the Marion County Coroner Office in Indianapolis, IN.

Ian D. Paul, M.D.
Co-Founder, Forensic Pathologist
Dr. Paul is a board certified forensic pathologist with 16 years of experience working at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner. While at OMI, he performed autopsies, testified in court, served as the forensic pathology fellowship director, and was the former pathology residency director. He currently signs death certificates for multiple hospitals on behalf of DCC and performs autopsies in Nevada.

Ben Murie, D.O.
Forensic Pathologist
Dr. Murie is a board certified forensic pathologist who currently practices in Utah. His interest in forensic pathology began in medical school, and has continued through his training and career. He has performed autopsies in various states and has gained more appreciation for the death certification process.
Outside of work duties, he enjoys a variety of outdoor activities and gardening.
He currently signs death certificates for multiple hospitals on behalf of DCC.

Eric Puster, D.O.
Pediatrician, Informaticist
Dr. Puster is a board-certified pediatrician and clinical informaticist practicing in Indiana. His interest in decedent data was piqued when he collaborated with Matthew Cain on a project involving autopsy reporting in 2020, and he has continued to work in this space, seeking better ways to identify, organize, and convey vital information. He sees patients in clinic and signs death certificates for pediatric cases for multiple hospitals on behalf of DCC.

Breanna Cypers
Marketing and Expansion
Breanna joins The Death Certification company with 8+ years of recruiting and sales experience including in higher education, retail and in the healthcare industry. In a work setting, she enjoys problem solving and relationship building.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and kiddos where they spend most of their time outdoors whether it's on their farm or exploring in the mountains.
Yolanda Alvarado
Office Manager, Graphic Designer
Yolanda has worked in the graphic design industry for nearly 15 years, specializing in advertising, new media, and brand development. After becoming a mother, she began working with DCC as the Office Manager and In-House Graphic Designer. Yolanda studied at the University of Evansville, graduating with a B.S. in Graphic Design and Communications.
